As individuals, we need to be considered accountable for our understanding and education. In the novel, most of the population is gullible and often completely recounts what they believe simply because the Party tells them it is untrue. Not only this, but as citizens, we must grasp or civic duty to be informed about public events. In a very classical sense, Orwell argues that without education there is no progress. Furthermore, if we lack understanding, we are unable to change or repair things that are broken and imposing.
