Ethan Frome
Essay
Suffering is a major component of Ethan Frome. Throughout the story, many characters suffer and it creates an ambiance of darkness in a cold winter setting. Sickness, death, and depression function in their own right as a literary device that can help the author achieve a certain sympathy, and sometimes empathy, for the characters. In this, Edith Wharton exemplifies the use of suffering to direct the plot of her story, develop characters, and influence the reader's emotions during the book.
